Good Morning, Jesus Christ!

A Minor Study of the Names of The Minor Prophets

March 21st, 2009 by Robb

A good friend of mine wanted me to do this…

Hosea or Hoshea or Oshea = “salvation”

Joel = “Jehovah is God”

It is interesting that these two follow each other. What does one need to do to be saved? Paul says we must identify Jesus as Yahveh/Yahweh/Jehovah in Romans 10:9-13

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Rom 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Verse 13 hearkens back to Joel 2:32.

Joe 2:32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered [saved]: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

“LORD” here means Yahveh/Yahweh/Jehovah. The Greek Old Testament translated Yahveh/Yahweh/Jehovah was kurios. Jews would have recognized that kurios meant Yahveh/Yahweh/Jehovah.

Whoever wants “Hoshea” (salvation) must agree that Jesus Christ is “Joel,” or “Jesus Christ is Jehovah God.

Amos = “burden”

Robb’s note: A “burden” often meant an oracle. We have burdens to pray for each other. If we don’t pray for these burdens, naturally they become more burdensome. Jesus said His burden is light. Ours should be, too, because we should always pray for others — to have a “burden” for them. Just like Christ “ever liveth to make intercession,” so should we. Who are those that carries these burdens?

Obadiah = “servant of Jehovah”

One must be a servant of Jehovah to carry the burdens.

Jonah = “dove”

If we follow our line of interpretation, Jonah’s name, Dove, could represent the Holy Spirit — the Helper, the Paraclete. We must pray in the spirit to move in the Holy Spirit. Thus our burdens are released for that which we pray. Another interpretation could be that Jonah was a type of Holy Spirit when he went to Nineveh to preach.

Micah or Micaiah or Michah = “who is like God”

The Dove is One “who is like God.” He is God the Holy Spirit.

Nahum = “comfort”

Jesus called the Holy Spirit the “comforter.” The Dove, who is like God, brings comfort.
Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Habakkuk = “embrace”

This could mean we embrace the Comforter or the Comforter embraces us, or both.

Zephaniah = “Jehovah has treasured”

The message expands: “The Dove, who is like God, will comfort and embrace those Jehovah has treasured.”

Haggai = “festive”

The message expands: “The Dove, who is like God, will comfort and embrace those Jehovah has treasured, and they are festive…”

Zechariah = “Jehovah remembers”

The message expands: “The Dove, who is like God, will comfort and embrace those Jehovah has treasured, and they are festive because Jehovah remembers….”

Remembers to do what?

Malachi = “My messenger”

The message expands: “The Dove, who is like God, will comfort and embrace those Jehovah has treasured, and they are festive because Jehovah remembers to send His messenger….’to prepare ye the way of Adonai, the Messiah.’”
